Football: Panthers Battle Until the End, Fall to Pembroke 27-18
It was a tremendous night of community, remembrance and high school football at Whitman-Hanson Friday, as the Panthers hosted Pembroke in front of a packed crowd. The stadium was filled with red, white and blue as the W-H community came together to honor the 25th anniversary of September 11 while supporting a young Panther team.
On the field, Whitman-Hanson battled until the final whistle, but Pembroke came away with a hard-fought 27-18 win.
Pembroke opened the scoring with an 8-yard touchdown pass, but Bobby Walker answered with a 60-yard touchdown run to tie it at 6-6. Pembroke retook the lead with 21 seconds left in the half on a 3-yard run and two-point conversion, then delivered the biggest play of the night — an 85-yard interception return as time expired that sent the Titans into halftime up 21-6.
The Panthers refused to go away. On a critical fourth down, Quinn Frazier hit Walker for a 35-yard touchdown, with Walker making an incredible second effort to reach the end zone. Van Le followed with an explosive kickoff return that set up Osten Brown's 3-yard touchdown run, cutting the deficit to 27-18. W-H kept fighting, but Pembroke held on.
Walker had a tremendous night with two touchdowns, Le provided a huge spark on special teams, Frazier was solid at quarterback, and the linemen on both sides of the ball turned in strong work. The Panthers will need to clean up the penalties and finish more scoring opportunities, but the effort and fight from this young team were evident all night.
More importantly, the night was a reminder of what high school athletics can mean to a community. It was a special evening at W-H — one that went far beyond the final score. The Panthers travel to Stoughton next week.
Field Hockey: Panthers Blank Martha's Vineyard 2-0
The field hockey team earned its first win of the season with a 2-0 home shutout of Martha's Vineyard. After a scoreless first quarter, the Panthers struck twice in the second. Senior forward Leah Cranshaw netted her first goal of the season off a great pass from senior forward Maeve Gavin, and sophomore forward Lexie Kameese scored her first varsity goal with an assist from Cranshaw. The Panthers held the lead the rest of the way, with senior goalie Calleigh Vurpillatte making four saves in the final 10 seconds to preserve the shutout. W-H is 1-1-0 overall, 0-1-0 in the Patriot League.
Girls Soccer: Draw at Duxbury, 6-0 Rout of Plymouth South
Whitman-Hanson went on the road and battled Duxbury to a 1-1 Patriot League draw. After an early Duxbury goal, keeper Addison Hughes and the back line of Milly Mahoney, Shelby Bell, Devin Olszewski and Caleigh Mahoney shut the door. Midway through the second half, Teagan Frattasio beat a defender and fired a 25-yard laser into the top corner to earn the point. Olivia Poulin, Keira Manchester, Mya Andrews and Lily O'Brien all turned in strong performances.
Back home, Bella DeLorenzo's two goals and an assist paced the Panthers to a 6-0 Patriot League win over Plymouth South. Alexandra Murphy, Claire Keegan, Olivia Poulin and Lily O'Brien each added a goal — the first varsity tallies for both Poulin and O'Brien. Addison Hughes and Elsie Sewall split time in goal for the shutout, while Frattasio, Manchester and Bell all played well. The Panthers are 1-0-1.
Boys Soccer: Panthers Dominate Plymouth South 5-1
The boys put on an outstanding performance, dictating the game from the opening whistle — controlling possession, generating chance after chance and setting the tempo from start to finish. Center backs James Sousa and Greyson Menear anchored a strong defensive effort.
Dylan Fencer opened the scoring by beating a defender and burying a 25-yard strike. Sid Monagari doubled the lead with a 20-yard shot, and striker Michael Shoughrow made it 3-0 by finishing a beautiful cross from James Sousa. Senior captain Joey Sousa capped the night with goals four and five — an unbelievable 25-yard rocket into the upper 90 and a calmly converted penalty kick. An exciting, well-deserved win from the first minute to the last.
Golf: Miller Medals as Panthers Top Plymouth North
The golf team defeated Plymouth North 218-241 on a blustery afternoon at Ridder Farms. Senior captain Matt Miller was medalist with a 3-under-par 31, junior Nic Beltramini shot 36, and sophomore Nate Pitts and freshman Owen Head both posted 37s. The Panthers (3-2) have the rest of the week off before traveling to Duxbury Yacht Club on Monday, where they'll look to avenge their season-opening loss to the Dragons.
Volleyball: Season-Opening Win, Marathon Loss to Silver Lake
Whitman-Hanson volleyball opened the season with a 3-1 victory at Plymouth South in its league opener (25-16, 20-25, 25-16, 25-15). Senior libero Rebecca Ellsworth anchored the back row, senior Presley Giannino led the offense with seven kills, and seniors Chloe Lussier and Madison Corrado added six kills apiece. Lussier also led from the service line with seven aces, and junior Kaori Peterson had a strong varsity debut on both ends of the floor. On Thursday, the Panthers dropped a marathon five-set match to Silver Lake, 3-2.
