Update from WH Athletics

The spring sports season has been a struggle thanks to mother nature but we finally have been able to start playing some games and our teams are off to an excellent start. Before we get to the update, we have a few other items to share.

First, a well-deserved congratulations goes out to seniors Taylor McVeigh and Lukas Moscoso for being named Whitman-Hanson’s Patriot League Scholar Athletes.  Both Taylor and Lukas represent the ideals of a student athlete achieving excellence in the classroom and in athletics.  They both will be joined by their parents as well as Mr. Szymaniak and I at the league wide dinner on Tuesday night at the South Shore Country Club.  A special thanks to all of the teachers and coaches who have helped not just Taylor and Lukas but all of our student athletes.

While on the topic of thank yous, we are very grateful to the citizens of Whitman and Hanson for supporting our tennis court project.  The courts came out beautiful.  The project would not have been so successful without the leadership from Ernie Sandland and our facilities crew.  We also want to thank Sue Moss and Dave Hickey for donating a new storage shed for the team.  Not only will our tennis teams enjoy these courts for years to come, but our entire community will benefit from this outstanding facility.

And now to our update:

1)      Our baseball team has stormed out to a terrific 6 and 1 start (5-0 in league play). On Friday, Matt Josselyn got his first start and win on the mound going 5 1/3 innings , giving up 5 runs on 8 hits, striking out 6 , and walking 2 before being relieved by John Murphy in the sixth.  Luke Tamulevich came on in  the seventh, and after hitting the lead-off batter, saw his defense turn a 6-4-3 double play. Another  groundball helped him retired the P-S 3, 4 and 5 hitters in order to end the game. Ethan Phelps went 4 for 4 on the day for Whitman-Hanson, while Ty Long and Austin Hyde had 2 hits each for the Panthers.  Baseball has a busy week hosting Duxbury on Monday, Scituate on Wednesday and travelling to Quincy on Friday. Our entire WH community is in for a treat on Saturday 5/6 with our team playing a special game against Hanover at Campanelli Stadium (Home of the Brockton ROX) in Brockton.  The game is at 7pm.  Tickets are on sale this week for just $7.  Anyone who pre pays for a ticket will be given a free Brockton Rox ticket upon entry on Saturday.  Only those who pre purchase tickets get the free ROX ticket.

The girls went on a special trip over April vacation traveling to Baltimore where they played Winter Mills High School (they won the game 7-1).  The team also took a day long tour of Washington DC as well as attended the Red Sox game against the Orioles at Camden Yards.  On Friday, Jr Colleen Hughes (2-4 RBI) pitched a 1-hit complete game shutout to lead WH (5-1, 3-0) to a 7-0 victory over Pembroke. She was backed by great defense from CF Sarah Saccardo who went 2-3 (3B 3R), C Kristin Arthur (2-3 4RBI) and SS Emily Cook (3-3 RBI 3R).

3)      The girls track team is also enjoying an excellent spring.  The Panthers snuck past a young and talented Silver Lake team in a close meet Thursday afternoon, 71-64. 6)      The boys tennis team has shown tremendous improvement this season and currently sits at 2 and 4.  Their best match of the week was also against Pembroke posting a 4-1 win. Pembroke was forced to forfeit number two doubles starting in a 1-0 hole. The number one doubles team of Brian Fox and Matt Hickey clinched the second point for WH with a 6-0,6-3 win. Tyler Rice would clinch the match at number two singles for WH, 7-6(5),6-2. Christian Marquez earned the final win of the day for WH, 6-4,6-4 at three singles.   On Friday, the boys lost a close one with Plymouth South 3-2 but it was truly a remarkable effort.  Tyler Rice was trailing 5-0 in the first set but never gave up and came back to win the match.  Christian Marquez showed great character in an epic 3 set loss which ultimately went to a tiebreaker and a 13-11 final score.  It was definitely one of the most exciting moments of the spring season.  Even though it didn’t turn out how we would have liked, we couldn’t have been more proud of Christian’s effort.

7)      The girls lacrosse team is in a bit of a rebuilding mode but we have seen great progress of late. The team won a league game versus North Quincy this afternoon 13-6. The Panthers were a little slow in the heat, but still managed to have 7 different scorers. Mel McAleer ( 1 assist) and Zoe Lydon both had hat tricks to lead the way on offense.
