Update from WH Athletics

• Congratulations to John Caliri and Courtney Durant who won the O’Brien Scholarships for excellence in the classroom and in athletics. Coach O’Brien would have loved both of these excellent students. • John Caliri and Kelsey Murray were named the Patriot League Scholar Athletes of the year while Colin McSweeney (MVP in all 3 seasons – soccer, wrestling and tennis) and Aimee Bombardier (softball MVP) won the Gurney Awards given for outstanding sportsmanship, athletic achievement and leadership. • The Spring sports season is not quite over as 3 student-athletes qualified for the New England Track Championships. Nicole Galewski, Sam Richner and Blake Hickey will all compete in Saco, Maine on Saturday. • The girls and boys had a great day at the All State championships on Tuesday. Nicole Galewski placed 4th in the long jump breaking her own school record with a jump of 17'7". Blake Hickey was 5th in the high jump with a jump of 6'4", Samantha Richner was 6th in the high Jump 5'2" the three of them have qualified for New Englands on Saturday in Saco Maine. The 4x800 team of Rachael Baker, Abby Baker, Gianna Cacciatore, Hannah Wells broke the 4x800 record for the second week in a row running 9:35, Rachael Baker was 10th in the mile 5:11 and Megan Brain was 14th in the javelin. • The girls Lacrosse team had a great season, not only qualifying for the tournament but winning their first game before ending the year with a loss in Needham. Boys Tennis (first time ever), boys lacrosse and softball all also qualified for the tournament. • The annual Kiwanis Recognition night was held on Tuesday. Excellence in academics and athletics was on full display with 25 students receiving MVP awards for outstanding contributions in clubs, activities and academics, while 24 students were honored as athletic team MVPs. Domenic Cacciatore won the prestigious Edward Clark award given to the male athlete who excels in community service, academics, leadership and athletics. Kelsey Murray won the first ever Sue Moss award which was established this year to honor the top female athlete who exhibits those same qualities. Boss Moss has be an integral part of the WH community for more than 45 years and this award will make sure her devotion to what it means to be a Panther lives on forever. Also at the recognition night, Nicole Galewski was awarded the Junior Plaque as the most outstanding female student-athlete, while Dondre James was the recipient of Junior Cup given to the most outstanding male student-athlete. Bonnie Corrigan (Whitman) and Terry McSweeney (Hanson) were honored by the senior student-athletes as the Community Service Award winners. • Whitman-Hanson graduate Joseph Cote made a generous donation at the Kiwanis Recognition night. He commissioned a painting to be done depicting Dennis M. O’Brien, who as most of you know, tragically lost his life when he was struck by lightning at football practice in 1978. The painting was unveiled alongside Dennis’s best friend, former football coach and AD Bob Bancroft, as well as Dennis’s brother Kevin. The painting will be displayed in the athletic hallway alongside an article about the Coach O’Brien written by WH Grad and Boston Globe sportwriter Nick Cafardo. Special edition prints will also be available for sale and raffle throughout the next year. • The WH Athletic department is pleased to announce the hiring of WH Alum Joe Bina as the new boys ice hockey coach. Joe returns to WH where he once served as an assistant coach. He has been coaching in college and at Xaverian High School. We are excited to have him back at Whitman-Hanson. Whitman-Hanson/Pembroke hired Bill Flynn as the new girls ice hockey coach for our co-op team. • All Junior and sophomore student-athletes will take the IMPACT test on Monday or Tuesday next week. You must have an up to date test on file in order to play in the fall. • All students who are interested in playing a sport next school year should signup online by the end of next week. You can do so at www.whathletics.blogspot.com . • The annual athletic first night will be held on Sunday August 19th (freshmen 5pm/everyone else 5:30pm). All student-athletes and at least one parent must attend if they intend on participating in any sport this school year. • Cheerleading tryouts have been changed to Tuesday and Wednesday next week from 2:30 to 4:30 pm. • Follow us on twitter at whathletics for the very latest in WH athletic news.
