Pat Cronin Named Baseball Coach

Whitman – Whitman-Hanson Regional High School is pleased to announce the appointment of Hall of Fame baseball coach Pat Cronin to the position of varsity baseball coach.  Cronin, who recently retired from East Bridgewater High School after 35 years as head coach, replaces Chris Catanoso who had to step down after taking a job out of state.

Coach Cronin's teams at East Bridgewater have enjoyed tremendous success with 3 South Sectional Championships (1993, 2012 and 2015 ) and 25 MIAA tournament appearances.  His 1993 team won the Division 2 Eastern Massachusetts State Championship.  Despite being the smallest school in Division 3, East Bridgewater gained consideration for the prestigious Super 8 tournament over the last two seasons and last year received a nomination.

Cronin is no stranger to Whitman-Hanson.  He was a teammate of the late Dennis O'Brien on the 1965 Class B state championship team here at Whitman-Hanson.  They were also teammates on the undefeated 1965 football Class C state championship.

"I am very excited to be returning to my alma mater as head baseball coach, and I can't wait to work with the ballplayers from Whitman and Hanson in the years ahead," Coach Cronin said.  "I think it is an honor to get this unexpected opportunity to coach baseball on a diamond in the shadow of a football field named after my childhood friend Dennis O'Brien."

Coach Cronin coached Red Sox bullpen coach and WH alum Dana LeVangie on the 1988 EB American Legion Zone 10 championship team.  He is a member of the Whitman-Hanson school Hall of Fame and his picture is prominently displayed in the John F. McEwan Performing Arts Center.  In 2012 he was inducted into the Massachusetts Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame.

"I have known and respected Pat for more than 25 years.  When I was coaching at Silver Lake, I used to send my pitchers to him in the off season.  I don't think there is a better teacher of the game, especially when it comes to pitching," Whitman-Hanson Athletic Director Bob Rodgers said.  "When I found out Pat was retiring from EB, he was my first call, first to congratulate him on a great career but then to see if he wanted to come home.  I was thrilled when he was excited about the opportunity.  Our student-athletes are very lucky to have the opportunity to play for such a terrific coach and person."

Coach Cronin retired as Chair of the English department at East Bridgewater in 2008 but remained on as baseball coach until retiring this winter.  The baseball season will begin with tryouts on Monday March 21st.
