Boys tennis

The Whitman-Hanson Boys Tennis team's run at the Patriot Cup ended today with a 4-1 loss to Hanover. The teams were fairly well-matched and the games were a lot closer than the scores reflected. In fact, for the first hour of today's match it seemed as if the Panthers were on their way to a second round win. All three singles players won their first sets and things looked good early. At first singles, Junior Aidan Hickey was up one after taking the first, 6-3, but dropped the second and ended up losing in the third set tiebreaker. At second singles Will Mulligan came out strong in the first set as well but also fell in the second and tiebreaker third sets. Both matches were really competitive and exciting to watch. In the third spot, Junior Sam Ennis looked really good today, producing the team's only win. He made a couple early adjustments and was able to settle into a groove after the first few games, winning decisively in two sets, 6-2, 6-1. He played perhaps his best match of the season. At the doubles positions, both teams struggled to gain momentum today and were fighting uphill the entire match. Both teams fought hard and gave all they had, but ultimately lost to Hanover's doubles. With the loss the team falls to 4-8. They have a couple weeks before their first round matchup in the state tournament.
